Letter - Consider your important vote on the marriage amendment
I respect people in Alexandria for their thoughtfulness, faithfulness and graciousness. I hope these values mean you will thoughtfully consider your important vote on this amendment. Think of me or another gay person you know and vote no.
To the editor:
My name is Amy Engebretson. My parents Paul and Linda raised me in Alexandria with values of hard work, compassion, faith, dignity and respect. Like other kids, I enjoyed the lakes, played Cardinal basketball, clarinet in the band, and grew in faith at First Lutheran Church. Those who know me know I’m quick to laugh, easy to be around and proud of my upbringing.
I now live in St. Paul with my 7-year-old daughter, and I am active in my church. I own a house, work hard, and love the lake here in the summertime. I also happen to be gay.
I plan to vote “no” on the marriage amendment on November 6. Voting no is not going to allow gay marriages; there is a law preventing that already. Voting yes is going to put discrimination into our Constitution. It hurts gay people and their families and tells me I’m not wanted here in Minnesota.
I respect people in Alexandria for their thoughtfulness, faithfulness and graciousness. I hope these values mean you will thoughtfully consider your important vote on this amendment. Think of me or another gay person you know and vote no.
