Chilly temperatures may have driven the masses inside for wine tastings and food fare at Carlos Creek Winery’s Applefest on Saturday but rustic Minnesotans also trickled out onto the patio and throughout the vineyard.

While the festival is named for the apple harvest, pumpkins were the featured fruit outdoors on the winery’s grounds. Pumpkin pie eating contests were held near the Marquette stage next to pumpkin carving nearby on the Minnesota Nice grill veranda.

Across the field, pumpkins flew from a giant catapult against a blue-grey clouded sky.

The duo, Patchoulli, spiced up the autumn air with folksy notes as horse-drawn carriage rides took festival folks on tours of the land.
