The Brandon-Evansville volleyball team wrapped up its regular season with a close five-set loss to Hancock after falling 3-0 to Wheaton-Herman-Norcross a day earlier.
The Chargers and Hancock were within striking distance of each other all night on Tuesday. The Owls struck first with a 25-23 win in the first set. The Chargers came back with 26-24 and 25-22 wins in the next two sets before Hancock edged them 25-23 and 15-8 to take the match.
“Losing a match like this is so tough,” head coach Kelly Olson said. “But we are proud of the way the girls came into Hancock ready to battle. It was an exciting match from the first serve until the final point, with both teams never giving up any ground to the other.”
Megan Friedrich continued her stellar senior season with 22 of her team’s 47 kills. She added 49 digs on the night as well. Caroline Jansen added 11 kills, while Kinsley Randt set them up with 42 assists.
The Chargers couldn’t get that same offensive output against an undefeated Warriors team on Monday night. Wheaton has dropped just one set all season on its way to a 21-0 record.
“The girls never really got it going against an unbeaten Wheaton team,” Olson said. “We started slow and ended the same way. Our serve receive and defense was off. It seemed that we were on our heels all night, backing up instead of going forward, and that is a tough way to try to play.”
Friedrich led the Chargers with eight kills, while Jansen finished with five. Randt had 16 assists and Megan Kokett led the defense with 12 digs.
Brandon-Evansville finished the regular season with an 8-17-3 record in dual match and tournament play. The Chargers were 5-5 in the Little Eight Conference, good for a third-place tie with Rothsay and Battle Lake. Underwood won the LEC title with a perfect 10-0 record.
