Football: Minnewaska edges Benson

The Minnewaska football team won its third straight game on Friday night to move to 3-4 overall with a 13-12 win over Benson.

The Lakers scored both of their touchdowns in the first quarter to take an early 13-6 lead. Quarterback Austin Ostrander connected with Jake Amundson for a touchdown, while Ostrander added another one rushing the ball.

That lead held up all night as the Lakers’ defense limited Benson to 212 yards of total offense. They were especially stingy on the ground, where the Braves ran for just 74 yards.

“We really played well, defensively,” head coach Steve Hill said. “Benson is a very good offensive football team, led by QB Matt Ahrnt. Defensive ends Isaiah Adams and Taylor Lundebrek did a great job of containing him and limiting his rushing yards…Austin Ostrander and Jayden Beecher were also key to keeping Ahrnt from breaking contain.”

Adams and Lundebrek both had two sacks to lead the defense. Nathan Snider added 14 tackles, while Mike Maus recovered a fumble that Lundebrek caused.

That helped Minnewaska overcome a slow night on offense. The Lakers got 98 yards passing from Ostrander as he completed 5-of-12 throws. Amundson caught three of those balls for 75 yards. Sam Long and Ostrander had 42 and 41 yards, respectively, to lead the ground game.

“We sure stumbled around on offense most of the night,” Hill said. “I thought we would be able to move the ball better than we did. We just were unable to get anything going consistently… credit Benson for having a good night defensively.”

The Lakers will wrap up the regular season tonight, Wednesday, when they welcome in Paynesville (4-3) for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
