Girls' tennis: Osakis heading back to state

Osakis tennis coach Ryan Maddock has lauded his team’s ability to find ways to win important points in pressure moments all season.
Last week, the stakes of every match went to another level in the Section 6A tournament. The Silverstreaks responded by playing some of their best tennis of the season on their way to securing their second straight trip to a state tournament by rolling through the rest of the field.
“Everyone played so confidently and aggressive right from the beginning,” Maddock said. “We got off to big leads in every match and were able to hold them off.”
Osakis got dominant play from its singles lineup all week as they dropped just one of 12 matches. That helped the Silverstreaks secure a 5-2 win over Melrose in the section finals after winning 6-1 against Minnewaska in the semifinals and running past West Central Area 7-0 in the opening round.
“The back-to-back state tournament appearances are special,” Maddock said. “It means all of the girls’ hard work is paying off, and it just makes them want more. They really like to play, so seeing the success that we have just compounds that exponentially.”
Maddock was perhaps most impressed by how his team played against a young but talented Minnewaska team in the semifinals. Osakis controlled things from start to finish in winning five of its six matches in straight sets. It was a performance that the head coach called “special” and one that has epitomized how this team has responded against quality opponents throughout the year.
