Alexandria swimming and diving: Cardinals splash St. Cloud Tech

Despite the services of a key cog in the lineup, the Alexandria girls’ swimming and diving team extended its win streak to seven with a 101-85 victory over St. Cloud Tech Thursday evening.

“With an injury to one of our top scorers in Madalyn Winger earlier in the week, the coaches and kids had to do some fast thinking, but contrived a way to win the closely fought battle,” said head coach Mark Storhaug. “The Cards and Tigers were tied four times over the course of the evening [and] it wasn’t until the last stroke was taken that the Lady Cards were able to celebrate.”

Several Cardinals stepped up their performances, and Alexandria also relied on its depth to push past Tech.

Megan Bristow won both the 200 and 500 free events with times of 2:07.96 and 5:50.74, while Kate LeBrasseur won the 200 IM in 2:27.65.

“Bristow and LeBrasseur did a great job filling in the holes left in the lineup from Winger’s absence,” said Storhaug.

Kalli Bowser won the 100 back in 1:05.55 and Hannah Eklund won the 100 breaststroke in in 1:14.41.

Rachel Peterson, Jaylen Olson-Rodel and Beth Burnham teamed up with Bristow to win the 200 free, while Bowser, LeBrasseur, Bristow and Peterson won the 400 free.

Maddy Gorghuber posted two of the seven season bests set by the Cardinals, and Heather Johnson saw a two-second drop in her 200 IM time as she clocked one of the biggest improvements.
