The St. Cloud Apollo boys’ soccer team didn’t waste any time playing up to its ranking as the second seed in the Section 8A tournament last Thursday night.
The Eagles were coming off a 5-1 win over Alexandria in the regular-season finale on October 8. Three days later, they won by the exact same score to end the Cardinals’ season with a 5-10-2 record.
St. Cloud Apollo scored less than six minutes into the game and never looked back. The Eagles put four on the board by halftime, led by two goals from Hamse Abdule. They added one more in the second to put the finishing touches on the win.
Alexandria’s only goal came with a little less than 13 minutes left. Nick Heseltine connected off an assist by Grant Becker. Zach Lamb had five saves in the losing effort.
“I am very proud of this team for not giving up and showing their character during that second half,” Alexandria head coach Cahil Collins said. “This is a team that just kept getting better and better as the season went along and our record does not indicate the true picture of the quality of this team…it was a true pleasure coaching this group of young men.”
