Vangsness fourth in MIAC championships

Alexandria’s Casey Vangsness, a junior at St. John’s University, finished fourth in the Midwest Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) men’s golf championships, helping the Johnnies to a second place finish.

Vangsness shot an 8-over-par 224 to tie for fourth.

Alexandria volleyball player Shaneé Herd was named the Central Lakes Conference defensive volleyball player of the week after notching 44 digs in two matches, putting her at 1,022 career digs.

Men’s adult basketball league registration

Lakes Area Recreation is taking registrations for the men’s adult basketball league.

League will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Discovery Middle School and Lakes Area Recreation gyms. Play is scheduled to start November 27.

The cost is $415 per team and deadline for registration is November 9.

Craig in playoffs

Former Alexandria Beetles player Allen Craig is once again in playoff action with the St. Louis Cardinals, evening the series between the Cardinals and the Nationals as St. Louis tries to defend its World Series championship.

Craig started a game-turning rally on a single, then homered and doubled on Monday to help his Cardinals’ team hand a 12-4 loss to the Washington Nationals.

Craig hit .307 with 22 home runs and 92 RBIs this season, despite missing 43 games.

Ostrander, Leland

pace Vikings

Glenwood’s Allie Ostrander and the Augustana Vikings are in first place in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate (NSIC) women’s golf championship.

The Vikings hold a 50-stroke lead over second place Minnesota State.

The NSIC championship consists of four rounds – two played in the fall and two played in the spring.

Ostrander leads all individuals after the first two rounds with an 11-over-par 155. She had a first round tournament low of 75.

Alexandria’s Maggie Leland moved up from 17th place on day one to tie for third at 21-over par 165. Leland shot an 89 on day one, but burned up the course with a 76 on day two.

Augustana has four of the top five individual spots after the fall half of the tournament.

Diekman shines for SCSU golfers

Alexandria’s Gordy Diekman, a senior at St. Cloud State University, is tied for fourth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate (NSIC) men’s golf championship after the first two rounds of play.

Diekman had rounds of 76 and 80 for a 12-over-par 156.

The NSIC championship consists of four rounds – two played in the fall and two played in the spring.

The Huskies have an eight stroke lead over second place University of Sioux Falls.

sight-in days

The Alexandria Gun Club will hold its annual sight-in days on Saturday-Sunday, October 20-21 and 27-28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its outdoor shooting range.

To get to the club, take Highway 27 west of Alexandria to Englund Road. Go north one mile to Magnuson Road and take a right, then drive ¼ mile. You can also follow signs from Highway 295 and Highway 27.

Youth basketball at LAR

Lakes Area Recreation is now accepting registrations for the youth basketball program for boys and girls in grades 1-6.

The 4-6 grade season will run from November 3 until January 12. The 1-3 grade season will run from December 1 until February 16.

A parent/coaches meeting will be scheduled for Wednesday, October 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the U of M Extension conference room. The fee is $47.

West Fargo boys’

basketball tournament

There will be a boys’ youth basketball tournament for grades 3-9 in West Fargo, North Dakota on November 10-11.

Registration deadline is November 1 and the cost is $135 per team.

Vikingland Curling

The Vikingland Curling Club will be holding a community education open house October 17 from 7-9 p.m., and on October 24, league play will begin.

At the community education event, there will be a brief off ice instruction including curling terminology, etiquette and technique. 

Once on the ice, instructors will go over the basics of curling including throwing a stone and sweeping. At the end of the session a short game will be played. Participants are urged to wear layered, loose clothing and clean athletic rubber soled shoes such as sneakers. All other equipment is provided. Be sure to arrive at 6:45 pm.

United Cerebral

Palsy run

The first United Cerebral Palsy “Run for a Reason” 5K and 1K will be Saturday, October 13 at Westwood Church in St. Cloud.

Asics long-sleeved T-shirts will be given to the first 200 registrants.
