Sophomore Erin Korkowski stepped up big for the Cardinal girls’ soccer team, scoring the lone goal in Alexandria’s 1-0 win over Moorhead Tuesday night during the regular season finale.

“After coming off a 1-0 win against Apollo 24 hours earlier, the Cards repeated the effort,” said head coach Tom Roos. “Emily scored again from the left side with a ball sent over the Spuds’ goalkeeper.

“It was a timely goal with the Cards’ two leading scorers, Gabby Koel and Anna Spanbauer, out with injuries.

“While the Spuds got many shots on goal, the Cardinal defense did a nice job keeping shots from the perimeter.  Defenders Anna Lee, Madison Edmonds and Becca Illies all had strong games.”

Alexandria was to have opened its playoff season yesterday, Thursday, against St. John’s Prep.

A 1-0 victory over St. Cloud Apollo Monday secured a second place finish in the Central Lakes Conference for the Cardinal girls’ soccer team, just one-half point behind champion Brainerd.

“The only goal came in the second half when Emily Korkowski received a ball from Megan Abrahamson and placed a sharp angled shot from 20 yards out over the head of the Apollo goalkeeper,” said head coach Tom Roos. “Co-captains Megan Abrahamson, Jess Syvrud and Anne Schneiderhan did a good job of leading the defense and limiting Apollo’s opportunities - helping goalkeeper Sara Bruzek to her seventh shutout of the season.

“This was the first full game played without the services of leading goal scorer, Gabby Koel, who is out the remainder of the season with an eye injury suffered in Thursday’s game against Sartell,” he said. “It was great to see the girls respond with a solid effort and a win.”
