Letter - You will understand why to vote No to Voter ID Amendment

To the editor:

Mark Twain said, “rumor can run all the way around the world while Truth is still putting on his pants.”

Minnesota is number-one in voter turnout is a truth that is getting lost amongst the charges of fraudulent voting in Minnesota. In fact, more of our state’s voters get to the polls than do voters in any other state. Why is this? Voter turnout began to soar after former Secretary of State Joan Growe worked to make our voting laws, including same-day registration, voter friendly. And it has remained high.

Under current Minnesota election laws, there have been no convictions for voter impersonation (or fraud) in this state. Furthermore, local Douglas County election officials have stated that the Voter ID Amendment would not prevent felons from voting illegally, and that it would undoubtedly make registering and voting not only more difficult but also costly for many eligible Minnesotans.

For more information on the Voter ID Amendment, go to www.lwvmn.org/page.aspx?pid=734. After you’ve read that information, you will understand why it is right to vote No on the Voter ID Amendment.
