Volleyball: West Central Area splits

West Central Area split a pair of matches last week, falling to Prairie North leader Upsala Tuesday night and defeating Royalton from the Prairie South Conference Thursday.

Tuesday night’s match was a sweep as Upsala improved to 8-0 in conference play with wins of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-10.

“We stuck with them and battled for the first two sets,” said West Central Area coach Beth Hanson. “They are a solid team and we were right with them, matching point for point.

“The disappointing part was that we gave up in the third set. We cannot take plays off, especially against quality teams. Our mentality needs to change to want to take on those teams.”

Holly VanKempen led the Knights with five kills, while Kelsey Hammer added three and Christina Kruise two.

Thursday night’s match was a reverse of the previous contest as West Central Area picked up the three-set sweep over Royalton 25-12, 25-17, 27-25.

“This was an excellent team win for us with everyone contributing,” said Hanson. “We attacked offensively and made some nice plays defensively.

“The primary difference in the game was that we served extremely well, while they missed quite a few. We ended the night with 10 team service aces.”

Hammer led the Knights with six kills and 13 digs, while Tiana Christenson had five kills, four ace serves and six digs, and Mariah Hennen had eight digs and two ace serves.

“McKenzie Hunter brought excellent energy tonight and served tough, getting two aces as well,” said West Central Area’s coach. “Danielle Diedrich played very well for us tonight and was strong at the net. She ended up with four kills and three blocks.”

Alysa Aanerud had three kills, Kruize four kills, nine assists and once ace, and Kiersten Sabolik had seven assists and five digs.
