Playing shorthanded due to illness, Ashby finished sixth overall in the Bertha-Hewitt volleyball tournament over the weekend, splitting with Brandon-Evansville, trading wins with Eagle Valley, and falling to Bertha-Hewitt, Verndale and Pillager.
The Arrows split their opener with Brandon-Evansville 25-17, 23-25 in a match that determined who would play for third and who would play for fifth.
The Bertha-Hewitt Bears, with their strong front line, were next and the Arrows were able to stay with their opponents during the first set, but struggled through the second.
“The passing was good,” said Ashby head coach Brenda Johnson, “but the Arrows couldn’t get anything around the blocks of Stokes, the Bears’ middle blocker.
“In the third round, we were matched up against a very scrappy Verndale team, who, height-wise, we matched up well with,” she said, “but their experienced hitters and consistent serving were [too much] for the Arrows’ lack of consistency.”
Ashby faced Pillager in round four, and kept it very close in the first set. Pillager’s middle blocker was able to find a hole in the middle of the court late in that opener and rallied Pillager to a win.
“Against Eagle Valley, the Arrows dominated the first set, but saw the attacking ability of the Rebels in the second,” said Johnson. “[We] managed to hang on for a much needed win.”
The Arrows had to face the Rebels once again in the medal round, with Eagle Valley pulling out the win in this matchup.
Meg Roley and Bailey Funkhouser finished with 33 and 27 kills, respectively, for the day.
Defensively, they had another change in the lineup, moving Paige Nelson from middle blocker to libero, and led the team with 50 digs.
