To the editor:
As county commissioner, Bev Bales serves on many committees. One of them is the Douglas County Local Advisory Council on Mental Health. This is a group that promotes the reduction of negative stigma around mental illness, educates the community on how to recognize mental illness, evaluates local mental health services and assesses the needs and gaps in services, as well as advocates for changes and improvements in mental health services.
“Changing attitudes, changing lives.” That is the theme of this year’s mental illness awareness week, October 7-13, 2012. One in four adults experience a mental health problem in any given year. One in 17 adults live with a serious mental illness.
Mental illness is a treatable disease. I know many who have a mental illness and are active community members working, volunteering and advocating for others. This is an opportunity to build awareness about how mental illness and the seriousness of this medical diagnosis affects our community.
Bev also chairs the Regional Mental Health Committee. She is a strong advocate for this work and I support her re-election on November 6 because we need her voice to continue on the county board.
