Volleyball results: Ashby splits, Minnewaska, Osakis win

An early Ashby burst in the first set against Rothsay faded as the Arrows fell 25-13, 25-20, 25-16 Thursday night.

“The Arrows were on fire for the first nine points of the set, and then they got our backs up against the wall and we struggled with our serve receive,” said Ashby head coach Brenda Johnson. “We moved players around again tonight and I saw some young girls really step up their game and showed a lot of talent and guts out on the floor.”

Ashby had seven kills from Meg Roley, who was 16-for-17 in the hitting game, while Alexis Ness had four kills and three blocks.

Amber Sundal and Cassandra Jordan combined for 10 assists as well as six and eight digs, respectively.

Ashby was 42-for-46 with 16 points and four aces from the service line, led by Jordan with four points and one ace in an 11-for-11 service performance. Roley was 7-for-8 with four points and one ace.

Ashby sweeps Hillcrest

The Ashby volleyball team swept Hillcrest Lutheran Academy on Tuesday night by scores of 25-12, 25-20 and 25-18.

“[We] played well together tonight,” head coach Brenda Johnson said. “We are still trying new things, but tonight felt like we were on the right track. The girls communicated well with each other and that helps everything run smoothly.”

Paige Nelson led the way with 17-of-17 serving and 16 points. She added two aces, while Sami Johansen was 12-of-13 from the serving line with seven points.

Meg Roley led the offense with 13 kills. Bailey Funkhouser added six and Amber Sundal and Cassandra Jordan combined for 21 assists.

“Our back row passed wonderfully tonight, which led to some great assists from our setters and awesome hits by our front row players,” Johnson said. “It is just fun to watch our girls go out there and have fun playing volleyball.”

Brandon-Evansville faced a high powered Underwood team Tuesday night, falling in three sets to the Rockets.

“We can see why they are ranked high within the region and leading our conference,” said head coach Kelly Olson. “The girls played well at times, but passing was what we struggled with tonight, both serve receive and free ball.

“We needed to stay within our game plan, funneling their hitters to our defense, but playing out of our system was too much to ask. The girls need to stay focused all the time with a team like Underwood. There is no time to let down.”

The Chargers dropped the first set 25-13, then fell 25-5, 25-23 to end the match.

“The first set started OK for us, and we were in it until a couple of calls went against us,” he said. “And considering our struggles with passing tonight, we needed calls for us, not against.

“The wheels really fell off during the second set. It was over so fast there is not much to say, except we struggled in every aspect of the game.

“The third set saw a good back-and-forth battle,” the coach noted. “The girls never gave in. We just couldn’t close it out when we had the chance.”

Megan Friedrich had a good game for the Chargers with 10 kills on 29 of 34 attempts, and had 12 digs.

The Chargers will be at the Bertha-Hewitt tournament tomorrow, Saturday, and at Rothsay on Tuesday.

WCA WINS TWO

The West Central Area volleyball team went 2-3 by winning its final two matches at the Hancock Tournament this past Saturday.

The Knights dropped three pool-play matches against Ortonville, Upsala and Morris Area-Chokio-Alberta. They bounced back, though, beating Yellow Medicine East and Ashby in 2-0 matches to finish in fifth place at the tournament.

“Overall, I am happy with how we played today,” head coach Beth Hanson said. “We are playing together with better intensity. I am proud of everyone for selflessness and willingness to do what is best for the team. Everyone contributed to our success and did very well in their role.”

Tiana Christenson led the Knights at the net in the final match with nine kills, while also having 10 digs. Holly VanKempen added eight and Kelsey Hammer finished with seven.

The strong finish came after West Central Area had dropped two matches to Browerville (3-0) and Swanville (3-1) earlier in the week. The Tigers won 25-11, 25-23 and 26-24 to complete the sweep.

Christenson led the way again with 11 kills and 16 digs. Mariah Hennen added 13 digs. VanKempen was solid at the net with nine kills and nine blocks, while Christina Kruize and Kiersten Sabolik combined for 27 assists.

Swanville had to go an extra set but won 22-25, 25-16, 25-11, 25-13. Hammer led the Knights against the Bulldogs with 11 kills and 15 digs.
