The Ashby football team put up 638 yards of total offense and needed almost every one of those in a 38-32 win over Ortonville last Friday night.
Quarterback Blake Ohren led the way with four touchdowns and 354 total yards. He ran 34 times for 221 yards and three scores and completed 11-of-17 passes for 133 yards, a touchdown and an interception. As a team, the Arrows ran for 505 yards against the Trojans.
“Offensively, we ran the ball with passion and conviction,” head coach Andy Campbell said. “Our line and blockers did an outstanding job for us tonight. Blake changed a few plays at the line of scrimmage to put our offense in better situations, which kept drives alive and helped put points on the board.”
Gage Olson was even more dominant running the ball. He finished with 264 yards on just 19 carries. He had a touchdown and three receptions for 43 yards, while Tanner Langlie added two catches for 31 yards and a score.
“Tonight was one heck of a football game that came down to the last few plays,” Campbell said. “We just happened to make a play or two more than Ortonville tonight to secure the victory.”
MINNEWASKA 38, MONTE 21
The Minnewaska football team snapped a 14-game losing streak in the program on Friday night as the Lakers built an early lead and hung on for a 38-21 win over Montevideo.
Minnewaska led 20-7 at the half and 26-7 after three quarters after Montevideo scored the first touchdown of the game. Austin Ostrander ran for three touchdowns, including a 26-yard scamper that sent his team into the break with a two-possession lead.
Minnewaska ran for 131 yards and passed for an additional 167. Jack Schultenover led the ground game with 48 yards on just five carries. Ostrander was 5-of-17 passing for 167 yards. Jake Amundson had 105 yards receiving on just two catches, while Schultenover added two for 23 yards and Jayden Beecher caught one for 39 yards.
“We were able to get the ball to our fast guys out in space and they put on quite a show,” Lakers head coach Steve Hill said. “Jake Amundson and Jack Schultenover both had great nights running the ball and catching the ball. We blocked well on the perimeter also. Jayden Beecher and Riley Thompson were out in front of many of those long runs.”
Taylor Lundebrek had a big day on defense for Minnewaska. He finished with eight tackles, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble. Jon Nygaard added eight solo tackles and an interception. Six takeaways were instrumental in helping the Lakers come away with the win.
“We had several guys that had to step up for us because of injuries,” Hill said. “The ‘next guy up’ rule definitely applied for the Lakers. Will Anderson, Grant Hitchcock and Kenny Diaz made their first starts of the season and did well in helping us to get our first win.”
