Edwards wins state title

During the recent Minnesota Gopher State Horseshoe Pitchers Association tournament, Byron Edwards of Alexandria won the Elder’s E open class championships

Edwards finished first with a 4-1 record and 220 points, hitting 103 ringers.

He was incorrectly identified as Byron Foss in an earlier article.

Alexandria Aces tryouts

The Alexandria Aces Basketball Performance Team will hold tryouts on Monday, October 8, at 6:45 p.m. at the Lakes Area Recreation gym.

Tryouts are open to boys and girls in 4th, 5th or 6th grades.

There is no charge for tryouts, nor is there a fee to be on the Aces.

Some of the venues that the Aces will be performing at this season include the University of Connecticut, University of Florida, University of Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota.

Wrestling

booster meeting

The Alexandria wrestling booster club will hold its first meeting of the season on Monday, October 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Jefferson High School teachers’ lounge.

Anyone with an interest in the Alexandria School District K-12 wrestling program may attend.

There are many opportunities to assist in providing a quality experience for wrestling athletes.

FCA Fields of Faith

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes will hold Fields of Faith on Wednesday, October 10 at 7 p.m. at Jefferson High School’s Citizens Field.

This is a peer-to-peer movement with students from across the nation gathering on athletic fields to share personal stories and challenge each other to apply their faith to their lives.

In case of inclement weather, the event will be held in the Jefferson High School gymnasium.

Vikingland Curling

The Vikingland Curling Club will be holding a community education open house October 10 and 17 from 7-9 p.m., and on October 24, league play will begin.

At the community education events, there will be a brief off-ice instruction including curling terminology, etiquette and technique. 

Once on the ice, instructors will go over the basics of curling including throwing a stone and sweeping. At the end of the session a short game will be played. Participants are urged to wear layered, loose clothing and clean athletic rubber soled shoes such as sneakers. All other equipment is provided. Be sure to arrive at 6:45 pm.

Cost is $5 per person for both sessions

Leland, Ostrander

lead Vikings to third

Alexandria’s Maggie Leland and Glenwood’s Allie Ostrander helped lead the Augustana women’s golf team to a third place finish at the South Dakota State Invitational.

Ostrander finished third overall with a three-round score of 231, while Leland tied for 17th with a total 244.

West Fargo boys’

basketball tournament

There will be a boys’ youth basketball tournament for grades 3-9 in West Fargo, North Dakota on November 10-11.

Registration deadline is November 1 and the cost is $135 per team.

United Cerebral

Palsy run

The first United Cerebral Palsy “Run for a Reason” 5K and 1K will be Saturday, October 13 at Westwood Church in St. Cloud.

Asics long-sleeved T-shirts will be given to the first 200 registrants.
