Willmar senior Alex Grove showed why he is considered one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the Central Lakes Conference in leading Willmar to a 27-14 win on its homecoming last Friday night.
Grove ran for 56 yards on 10 carries and threw for almost 250 more. He connected with Brandon Christenson on a 21-yard touchdown in the second quarter before Grove punched in a score from a yard out that gave his team a 27-0 lead by the break.
“The second quarter proved to be our undoing as we allowed 21 points in that quarter, giving up a couple of short fields following offensive turnovers,” head coach Mike Empting said.
Alexandria responded with the only two scores of the second half. Jake Bear got his team on the board in the third quarter on a 13-yard touchdown run. Mitchell Peck then went 83 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Peck led the way for an Alexandria ground game that finished with 259 yards rushing. The junior back had 155 yards on 11 carries. Quarterback John Vogeler had 43 yards on 13 touches, while Nathan Huss had 30 yards on just four carries.
The Willmar defense has allowed just 19.4 points per game through the first five weeks of the season. That is third best in the CLC and they were led by linebackers Trey Tollefson and Zech Streed with 15 tackles each on Friday night.
Huss led Alexandria on defense with eight tackles, a fumble recovery, a pass breakup and a quarterback sack. Parker Revering added nine tackles and Parker Bowden finished with five tackles and an interception.
