Alexandria girls' tennis: Cards 2-0 at Detroit Lakes

A pair of wins made a beautiful Saturday even better for the Cardinal girls’ tennis team, who defeated Thief River Falls 4-3 and Detroit Lakes 7-0 at the DL triangular.

“In the first match of the day, we faced off against the Prowlers of Thief River Falls,” said Alexandria head coach Dave Ronning. “Our singles players were on fire in this match and that proved to be the difference as we swept the singles and Thief swept the doubles.

“We started well at second doubles with Marissa [Wheeler] and Kim [Wilkins], and we started well at third doubles with Rachel [Sjostrand] and Miranda [Sater] as we won the first set at both spots,” said Roos, “but we didn’t end well as Thief came back to claim the next two sets at both spots.

“We mixed some things up in our doubles lineup, and it proved fatal in this match, but we are still trying to improve our lineup for the playoffs.

“Our singles players made quick work of the Prowlers, giving up a total of seven games.

“Bria [Schuler] started her match down 1-2 and went on to win 11 of the next 12 games,” said Roos.

Alexandria didn’t have any real problems with the Lakers in a 7-0 win as all matches were decided in straight sets.

“In the Detroit Lakes match, we stuck with the same lineup to see if we could iron out some of the wrinkles in our doubles lineup and the girls responded well,” said the coach. “Our doubles lineup gave up a total of six games to avenge themselves for the first match of the day.

“The girls have put themselves in a good position with a 19-2 record and an unbeaten season in the North Sub-section,” he said. “Now the coaches will decide the seed order of the teams and the Cardinals are crossing their fingers in hopes of a first seed over Bemidji, who is also unbeaten in the north.

“Unfortunately, the Cardinals do not play the Lumberjacks this season, and their fate will rest in the hands of the coaches. Hopefully, the coaches will factor in the quality of the schedules both teams play. The Cardinals have played as many as 10 more matches and have played several ranked teams throughout the season.”

Alexandria improved to 19-2 overall and played St. Cloud Apollo last night, Tuesday, in the regular season finale.
