Alexandria boys' soccer: Cards battle Warriors to a tie, fall to Crusaders

The Cardinal boys found themselves trailing Brainerd 1-0 in their Central Lakes Conference soccer match Thursday, but weren’t about to let the Warriors get the best of them.

With just 29 seconds remaining, Chandler Davis took a direct free kick from 35-yards out, connecting with the back of the net to tie the game 1-1 and send it to overtime.

Neither team was able to find an opening in the extra period, leaving the two teams tied.

“The Cards started out slow, letting the Warriors control much of the first half,” said Alexandria head coach Cahil Collins. “Their work paid off for Brainerd, with them scoring in the 33rd minute.”

Nick Solheim scored the Warrior goal on an assist from Brayden Campbell.

“The Cards came out much stronger in the second half and played much better,” said the coach. “We were controlling better than we did in the first.

“It was a nice comeback to tie the game,” he added. “The boys never gave up.”

Zach Lamb made eight saves in goal, while Brainerd goalkeeper Joe Anderholm made 11 saves.

The Cardinals hosted St. Cloud Tech last night, Tuesday, and will host Sartell tomorrow night, Thursday.

ST. CLOUD CATHEDRAL 1, ALEXANDRIA 0

The Alexandria boys’ soccer team stuck with St. Cloud Cathedral but couldn’t find any offense in a 1-0 loss to the Crusaders on Saturday.

St. Cloud Cathedral hasn’t lost a game all season and the Crusaders made sure that didn’t change against the Cardinals. They allowed just four shots on net. Cathedral had just six shots on net but one of those got past goaltender Zach Lamb in the 33rd minute to secure the win.

“The boys played a fine defensive game against the number four rated team in Minnesota’s Class A,” Alexandria head coach Cahil Collins said.

The win moved the Crusaders to 10-0-2 overall and knocked Alexandria to 5-6-2.
