Volleyball results: Brandon-Evansville, Osakis, Minnewaska win

Henning 3, Ashby 0

Ninth-ranked Henning was just too powerful for Ashby Tuesday night as the Arrows fell to the Hornets in three straight sets 25-13, 25-13, 25-6.

“The Arrows are still looking for that magical lineup that will provide us with the flow we need to be successful in all six rotations,” said head coach Brenda Johnson. “The Arrows need to regroup after this match.”

Bailey Funkhouser and Alexis Ness led the Arrows in kills as the team tallied 14 for the night. Samantha Johansen led the team with four digs on defense, half of the eight total digs by the team.

Cassandra Jordan and Taylor Koefod combined for nine assists as the Arrows finished the night serving 29-of-30 for 10 points and one ace serve.

Ashby hosted Rothsay last night, Thursday, and will be at Hillcrest Tuesday night.

B-E 3, Battle Lake 0

The Brandon-Evansville volleyball team went into Battle Lake and came back with a 3-0 win to move above .500 in the Little Eight Conference on Tuesday night.

The Chargers were able to put the Battlers away 25-21 in the first set before taking the second a little more handily 25-13. They had to work again in the third, but got the job done with a 25-23 win that moved them to 3-2 in league play.

“We played a bit sluggish at times but never dug ourselves a hole, which was great to see,” head coach Kelly Olson said. “Our serving kept the pressure on Battle Lake and got us a lot of free ball chances.”

Megan Kokett took care of business five times herself with aces from the serving line. She also led the defense with 25 of her team’s 73 digs.

Megan Friedrich once again led the team in kills with 10. Caroline Jansen added six, while Mariah Hansen finished with three of the Chargers’ 22 kills. Kinsley Randt set them up all night with 16 assists.

“I liked our overall energy tonight,” Olson said. “I like our steady improvement as each week’s matches come. I also like how we are recognizing the small things that are holding us back from playing a full match at top form. I look forward to seeing that next step and seeing where it takes us.”

Minnewaska swept past Yellow Medicine East Tuesday night to improve to 12-4 overall.

The Lakers earned wins of 25-18, 25-13 and 25-20 behind nine kills and four ace serves from Lexi Amundson. She also paced the Lakers with six digs.

Ashton Byrne had 25 set assists and Ariel Ostrander had two ace blocks in the win.

The Lakers remain firmly in second place behind unbeaten Sauk Centre in the West Central Conference standings with a 6-1 league record.

The Lakers played at BOLD last night, Thursday, and on Tuesday will be at Paynesville.

The Osakis volleyball team upped its record to 10-4 overall on Tuesday night as the Silverstreaks made easy work of Browerville in a 3-0 sweep.

Osakis won the first set 25-18 before controlling the next two and winning 25-13, 25-16.

“We played scrappy defense and were able to defend the Browerville offense well,” head coach Kirsten Wessel said. “Our serve receive was not as good as it has been other nights, but the setters kept busy getting the ball to our hitters for dominating attacks.”

Becka Sadlemyer led that attack with 13 kills on the night. She also had five blocks to complete a dominant night at the net. Dani Chisholm added six kills, while Brooke Sorenson finished with five of the team’s 29 kills.

“Our hitters are getting so much smarter on knowing what to do with the ball in various situations,” Wessel said. “These girls are really clicking together, and they are fun to watch.”
