Alexandria boys' soccer: Cardinals edge Willmar
Foster scores go-ahead goal for Alexandria in 2-1 win.
Willmar may have outshot Alexandria, but it was the local Cardinals who made the most of their attempts, edging the visiting Cards 2-1 in Central Lakes Conference boys’ soccer action Tuesday night.
“Willmar went ahead with a very good shot coming from [keeper] Zack Lamb’s right,” said Alexandria head coach Cahil Collins. “The Cardinals fought back to tie the game with a penalty kick after Willmar committed a foul in their penalty area. Matt Pilgrim put it in the top right side of the goal.”
The two teams finished the half in a dead heat, tied at 1-1.
In the second half, just one ball found the net, with that shot giving Alexandria the lead and the eventual win.
“The boys worked very hard and played some good soccer to create the opportunity [to score] with Jake Strand crossing the ball to a running Manford Foster to put Alexandria ahead,” said Collins. “The boys held on to win the game.”
Alexandria is now 5-5-1 overall and 4-4-1 in CLC play. They played at Brainerd last night, Thursday, and will be at St. Cloud Cathedral tomorrow, Saturday. Tuesday they will be hosting St. Cloud Tech.
