Card girls' swimming and diving: Last event gives Alexandria a win over Willmar

It came down to the last event of the night before Alexandria secured a win in a battle of the Cardinals swimming and diving teams last Thursday.

Willmar was within striking distance going into the 400-freestyle relay. Alexandria’s Madalyn Winger, Kate LeBrasseur, Kalli Bowser and Rachel Peterson made sure they didn’t get any closer though as they took the event by more than three seconds in a time of 3:58.87.

That was one of eight first-place finishes for Alexandria. Winger added two individuals to her night with a win in the 100 butterfly (1:09.38 and the 500 freestyle (5:52.55). Kalli Bowser also added two after taking the 100 freestyle (59.33) and the 100 backstroke (1:06.24).

Other individual wins came from Peterson in the 200 freestyle (2:13.06), LeBrasseur in the 200 IM (2:29.24) and Jenna Kremer in diving. Kremer beat out second-place finisher Maddy Lindblad by more than 12 points after finishing with a total of 166.25. That was 21 points better than her previous total.

The Cardinals used some depth to secure the team win behind three 1-2 finishes. They also used nine season bests, including two from Hannah Lindgren.

“Hannah was a big key to the victory as she sliced off chunks of time in her two races,” head coach Mark Storhaug said. “Eight seconds in the 500 free and two seconds in the 100 breaststroke to steal away a few much-needed points for Alexandria.”

It helped secure the Cardinals’ fourth win of the season in six meets. They moved to 3-1 in the Central Lakes Conference in the process.
