Card girls' soccer: Alexandria tops Fergus Falls 3-0

The Alexandria girls’ soccer team exploded out of the gates last Thursday on its way to a 3-0 win over Fergus Falls.

The Cardinals needed just 31 seconds to take a 2-0 lead that they never came close to relinquishing against the Otters. Gabby Koel controlled the kickoff for Alexandria and found Anna Spanbauer breaking down the field. Spanbauer gathered the ball and put it in from 18 yards out on the right side just 11 seconds into the game.

Twenty seconds later, Alexandria added another. Spanbauer created a turnover off the kickoff this time before returning the favor to Koel who took the pass and put it home from the left side to all but end things less than a minute into the game.

Just to be certain, the Cardinals put the finishing touches on the win when Spanbauer sent in a corner kick that was volleyed into the goal by Chelsey Salto.

“This was our third game this week,” head coach Tom Roos said. “And it was starting to take its toll on some of our players. The three goal lead allowed us to give a break to some tired and dinged up players and give extra playing time to some deserving players coming off the bench.”

The Alexandria defense only allowed four shots to the Otters all night. Sarah Bruzek stopped all of them as she earned her team’s fifth shutout of the season to help the Cardinals move to 6-2-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the Central Lakes Conference.
