Letter - Are they all alike?

To the editor:

In response to the August 17 letter, “Mankind has believed in Thor, Zeus and a myriad of other gods:”

The spokesman for Sennacherib, king of Assyria, ridiculed God as a source of protection. “Who among all the gods of the lands have delivered their countries from my hand…?” (2 Kings 18:35) Sennacherib soon discovered that God the Creator is all-powerful.

The Declaration of Independence (1776) says, “… all men … are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights…” The founders made their Declaration of Independence “…with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence…”

Quaker Potts said, “… It was a most distressing time of ye war, … all were for giving up the Ship … to my astonishment I saw the great George Washington on his knees alone … at Prayer to the God of the Armies, beseeching to interpose with his Divine aid…”

On 3/1781, George Washington wrote, “…Providence… has at times been my only dependence, for all other resources seemed to have failed us.”

In his First Inaugural Address, President Washington observed, “…No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than those of the United States. Every step by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency…”

Not surprisingly, Article 2 of the Articles of War passed by Congress and signed by President Jefferson (4-10-1806) “earnestly recommended to all officers and soldiers, diligently to attend divine service…”

Benjamin Franklin’s question remains, “…And have we now forgotten that powerful friend? Or do we imagine that we no longer need his assistance? … the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth – that God governs in the affairs of men.”
