Hockey: Blizzard off to fast start in NA3HL

The Alexandria Blizzard got its inaugural season in the NA3HL off to a fast start by sweeping two games at Quad City this past weekend.

Alexandria dominated the pace of play in both games on its way to a 2-0 win on Sunday and a 3-2 win on Saturday. The Blizzard outshot Quad City 37-19 on Sunday, including 16-6 in the middle period when Alexandria scored both of its goals.

Ian Eckland made a strong first impression for the Blizzard with four points over the weekend. He connected 8:04 into the second period before Bryce Mitzel scored a little more than a minute later. Kyle Miller made that lead stand up as he shut out the Junior Flames on 19 shots.

Alexandria outshot Quad City 38-11 the night before but still needed two third-period goals to come away with the win. Alexandria’s Garrett Skinner provided what proved to be the game winner when he took a pass from Eckland and scored a little more than eight minutes into the final frame.

The Blizzard had nothing to show for outshooting Quad City 16-1 in the second period. The Junior Flames made that one shot count as Jason Hoehn connected to give his team a 2-1 lead after two.

Quad City had opened the door for a comeback by taking a hooking penalty with just 10 seconds left in the middle frame. Karson Kuntz took advantage of that just 38 seconds into the third period when he scored from the point off assists from Eckland and Tanner Duffney. Eckland’s assist on Skinner’s game winner a few minutes later gave him three points for the game after he opened up the scoring for Alexandria with less than two minutes left in the first period.

The Blizzard will take its 2-0 record on the road again this Friday in a game at Breezy Point. The puck will drop at 7:30 p.m.
