Dorothy Naomi Johnson Nelson died on her 89th birthday on September 16, 2012 and received the ultimate gift of a heavenly body and meeting her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ face-to-face.
Dorothy was born September 16, 1923 in Evansville, the daughter of Victor and Nelle (Stene) Johnson. She attended country school in Evansville through the 6th grade when the family moved to a farm by Brandon. Dorothy graduated from Brandon High School in 1941.
After graduation, Dorothy worked for the Hakes Variety Store in Alexandria and then was employed by the Office of Price Administration until it closed. Dorothy then went to work for JCPenney in its office.
Dorothy was united in marriage to Marvin Nelson at Chippewa Lutheran Church in Brandon in May of 1948. To this union, four children were born: Neil, Diane, Mark and Cynthia, who all feel they were blessed with the best mom ever.
She was a very active member at Calvary Lutheran Church. Dorothy and Marvin really enjoyed hosting the pig roast and volunteering for other church activities. She would also visit people in the hospital and helped do hair at Bethany Home for more than 30 years.
Dorothy will be remembered for her beautiful flower gardens and yard.
In November 2011, Dorothy moved to Three Links Cottage on Forest in Northfield, to be closer to family. Her love of helping people was evident when she told her children that it bothered her while living there that she couldn’t physically do anything for anyone anymore but she could still pray for them.
She is survived by her children, Neil and wife, Jane; Diane and husband, Joel Johnson, Mark and Cindy Nelson; three grandchildren, Amanda and husband, Steve Decker; Jessica and husband, Tom Williams; Juanita and husband, David Larson; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin.
A Celebration of Life Service was held on Thursday, September 20 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Burial was at Kinkead Cemetery.
Arrangements are with Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria; www.andersonfuneral.net.
