Card boys' soccer: Alexandria ties Sauk Rapids-Rice 1-1

The Alexandria boys’ soccer team added a 1-1 tie to its 3-3 record as the Cardinals ended Thursday night’s game with Sauk Rapids-Rice 1-1.

“The Cards, hoping to avenge a heartbreaking loss last year, found themselves down a goal after the first half,” said head coach Cahil Collins.

“There was one player on the Sauk Rapids team who was giving us fits, taking a number of shots early in the game before placing one finally in the net.  Shane Gibbons was assigned to shadow and stop No. 8 [Niman Hassan], and he did a fantastic job, holding him to just one off-the-mark shot for the rest of the evening.”

Hassan scored the Storm’s only goal of the game on an assist from Kyle Olson.

“The Cards, who are earning a reputation as a second-half team, began to apply pressure on the Sauk Rapids’ defense,” said the Cardinal coach. “Chandler Davis was extremely accurate on corner kicks, and it was Jesse Ohman who finally converted, blasting a shot into the net from the far post.”

Unofficially, Sauk Rapids goalie Sam Hastings had seven saves while Cardinal goalie Zach Lamb made 14.

Alexandria will host Fergus Falls tomorrow night, Thursday, and will see Willmar come to town next Tuesday.
