Card volleyball: Alexandria sweeps Sauk Rapids-Rice

The Alexandria volleyball team earned its first 3-0 sweep of the season last Thursday when Sauk Rapids-Rice came to town.

It was the third straight win of the season for the Cardinals as they improved to 6-4 overall and 4-1 in the Central Lakes Conference. Alexandria won the first two sets 25-18 before putting things away with a 25-14 win in the third.

“It was fantastic to see the entire team come out with the energy and determination necessary to take a match in three sets,” head coach Becky Schlichting said. “Something we hope to do more often from here on out. The girls are very capable. It is just a matter of maintaining consistency.”

The Cardinals spread the ball around on their way to 26 kills. Allie Noetzelman finished with a team-high 11 assists, while Nicole Canavati had nine. Amanda Christianson and Adrianne Wensman had five kills apiece, while Tara LeBrasseur and Emily Kuennen each had four.

The Cardinals were also able to make life difficult for the Storm at the net with 17 blocks. Wensman had six of those, while Shanee’ Herd led the defense from the back row with 14 digs.
