The Alexandria football team got the start it wanted in Fergus Falls but couldn’t sustain that as the Otters dropped the Cardinals to 0-3 with a 48-35 loss last Friday night.
Sophomore running back Jake Bear had the best rushing night of his young career with 135 yards on 21 carries. He got his team going with two first-quarter touchdowns, the first of which came from 48 yards out. Bear added another score from a yard away to give his team an early 14-0 lead.
The Otters jumped right back in the game with 20 unanswered points after that. The Cardinals’ defense was plagued by the big play a week ago and it hurt them again in week three. Six of the Otters’ seven touchdowns came on plays of 20 yards or more.
Junior quarterback John Vogeler helped Alexandria overcome that temporarily as his 22-yard touchdown run in the second quarter gave his team a 21-20 lead at the break. The Otters responded with a 28-point third quarter that opened things up.
Fergus Falls started that stretch with a 66-yard run to take the lead back at 28-21. The Otters never trailed again after that. The Cardinals’ Mitchell Peck made it a one-possession game again at 34-28 after a 13-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. He added another score from five yards out in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to overcome scoring plays of 66, 77 and 53 yards by the Otters in the second half.
Alexandria got its ground game going with 330 yards rushing. Peck formed a nice one-two punch with Bear as he added 120 yards on 18 carries. The Otters countered by putting up 387 yards on the ground themselves. They completed just four passes on the night, but they went for 101 yards and two scores.
The win moved Fergus Falls to 3-0 on the season and kept Alexandria winless heading into its homecoming game this weekend. The Cardinals will try to break that losing streak when they welcome in St. Cloud Apollo this Saturday at 3 p.m.
