Lake Region Writers Conference set October 6

The 2012 conference, “The Writer’s Journey,” features nationally acclaimed writer Will Weaver, whose novels and short stories have earned the praises of reviewers from coast-to-coast.

Lake Region Writers Network (LRWN) brings its well-received writers’ conference back for the fourth year. Last year’s conference prompted comments such as: “A good rewarding experience that would bring out the writer in any of us.”

The 2012 conference, “The Writer’s Journey,” features nationally acclaimed writer Will Weaver, whose novels and short stories have earned the praises of reviewers from coast-to-coast. His many awards include the Minnesota Book Award for Fiction for A Gravestone Made of Wheat & Other Stories (Simon & Schuster, 1989) and Striking Out, Farm Team, and Hard Ball (HarperCollins, 1993/95/98), which were honored as Best Books for Young Adults by the American Library Association. The Survivors, his latest book for young adults, will be published in January, 2012.

Like Weaver himself, the day-long gathering offers something for adult and young writers alike. Workshops range from “Young Adult Literature” by Will Weaver to “The Art of Description” by Barry Lane. Barnes and Noble offers tips on getting published in “Pubit!” while Mark Vinz and Athena Kildegaard share their accumulated wisdom in “What Editors Want.” Whether novice or accomplished, whether writer of screenplay, fiction, poetry, or memoir, participants will find workshops that inspire and instruct.

The conference is on Saturday, October 6 at M|State in Fergus Falls from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Cost is $50, including keynote address, workshops, and release of Lake Region Review, Number 2 as well as lunch and opportunities for networking and book browsing. Students may register for $40. Both beginning and established writers are invited to attend.
