Volleyball: Brandon-Evansville tops Ashby in LEC

Brandon-Evansville earned a sweep over Ashby in Little Eight Conference volleyball Tuesday night, but not without some hard work.

“Ashby fought us the whole match,” said Chargers head coach Kelly Olson. “The story of this match was each time we had Ashby on the ropes, they seemed to make some plays and hop right back into the set, so we have to give them credit for that.”

The Chargers won sets one and two by identical scores of 25-22, then took set three 25-19.

“In set one, [Kinsley] Rand gave the Chargers the ammo they needed to pull away with her serving,” said Ashby coach Brenda Johnson. “She is also a very consistent setter and put the ball in her hitters’ hands.”

Randt finished the night with six aces as she went 22-for-23 at the line and added 13 set assists.

Set two saw the Arrows with a lead, but unable to keep it.

“We mixed up our offense and I thought our setters distributed the ball well during this set and kept the Chargers on their toes,” said Johnson. “We were just shy of putting this set away. Unforced errors plagued us.

“In set three, the Arrows experienced an offensive breakdown and we were not able to put everything together.”

The Chargers got a great game from Emma Friedrich and Mariah Hansen on defense.

“Our middles, Emma and Mariah, did a great job closing the block tonight,” said Olson. “They are the keys to our whole defense and without them, we would be in trouble.”

Cassandra Jordan served for 10 points on the night for the Arrows, with Paige Nelson adding seven. Meg Roley had six kills.

“I was still pleased with the play of my team,” said the Ashby coach. “This team is very athletic and has a lot of potential.

“We are still working on our court organization and ability to make good choices in tight situations. Youth is on our side.”

For the Chargers, Megan Friedrich had six kills and Caroline Jansen added five.

“Overall, we have some things to work on, but it was great to get a conference win at home after a tough weekend,” said the Brandon-Evansville coach. “The girls should be commended on bouncing back.”

Brandon-Evansville will be at the Minnewaska tournament tomorrow, Saturday, and will be at West Central Area next Thursday.

Ashby is scheduled to host Underwood Tuesday.
