Card tennis: Alexandria blanks Fergus Falls

It was another perfect match for the Cardinal girls’ tennis team as they shut out Fergus Falls 7-0 Tuesday afternoon as all seven spots won in straight sets.

“The Cardinals came out strong, started well at every spot and never let up,” said head coach Dave Ronning. “Fergus is in a rebuilding year and has many young players in the lineup. They fought hard and played with heart, and they were pleasant girls with good sportsmanship.

“In the singles’ lineup, all the girls won in straight sets and they surrendered a total of six games.

“In the doubles’ lineup, all were dominating the net and putting the Otters on their heels throughout their matches,” he added. “Our girls looked relaxed and comfortable, and were playing with confidence.

“As a team, we want to improve daily and the girls are working hard at it, so it pays dividends later in the season and on into the playoffs.”

Ellie Bergstrand at second singles didn’t allow a single game against her, winning 6-0, 6-0, while Rebecca Lukes won 6-0, 6-2 and Carly Snell and Bria Schueler were 6-1, 6-1 winners.

At second doubles, Rachel Sjostrand and Marissa Wheeler lost just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win, while Kim Wilkins and Miranda Sater won 6-0, 6-2 at third doubles. At first doubles, Jessica Larson and Jenna Hedstrom had to work a little harder for the win, still taking it in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
