Janice Elaine Petersen, 73, died Friday, September 7, 2012 at Knute Nelson in Alexandria.

Janice was born July 4, 1939 in Buffalo County, Wisconsin to Jesse and Dorothy (Dennis) Carney. She graduated from Patrick-Henry High School in Minneapolis in 1957.

Jan married Richard Petersen on August 16, 1958 in Minneapolis. The couple made their home in Brooklyn Center. To this union, the couple was blessed with two sons. After her boys started to attend school, Jan started working as a teacher’s aide in the Osseo School District. The couple retired in 1994 and moved to Alexandria. Jan missed the kids and started working with the Alexandria School District as a para-professional in 1995, which she continued to work through this last fall.

Jan enjoyed reading and visiting with people especially her family and friends. Her life centered around children, whether it be working with the kids in school, a child walking by, or spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They all brought her so much joy.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Petersen of Alexandria; sons, Tim (Cher) Petersen of Brooklyn Center and Mark (Shari) Petersen of Alexandria; grandchildren, Nathan Petersen, Renee (Brandon) Sneen, Tara Petersen, Trent Petersen, Cassidy Petersen and Mallory Petersen; great-grandchildren, Landon and Mason; brother, Doug (Diane) Carney of Maple Grove; sisters, Barbara (Michael) Bennion of Kenmore, NY and Nancy Kendall of Minneapolis; and many nieces and nephews.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Dorothy.

A memorial service was held Thursday, September 13 at Alexandria Covenant Church in Alexandria with the Rev. John LeVahn officiating. Music was provided by soloists, Stephanie Effertz and Cassidy Petersen. Honorary urn bearers were Jan’s grandchildren.
