100 YEARS AGO

SEPTEMBER 1912

There are 503 elementary and 177 high school students enrolled for fall classes at Alexandria schools… The first place Silver trophy that was won by Douglas County for its exhibit at the Minnesota State Fair is in a window at Kortsch’s Store… One of the fair’s popular attractions were free car rides for women and children… August Anderson was out enjoying a ride in his open air auto when the spare tire on the running board worked loose. He got a hold of it and in doing so, let go of the steering wheel and tipped over into the ditch. Five men from Minneapolis came along and lifted the car back onto the road. Seems that he should learn there is a difference between driving a car and a team of horses.

50 YEARS AGO

SEPTEMBER 1962

Madame Emile Ralaody-Ralarosy, a lawyer, judge and concert violinist from Madagascar, was a guest of Mrs. Arnold Martinson last week. The visit was arranged through the Department of State Foreign Leaders Exchange Program… Seven men will serve on the governing board of the newly organized Runestone Museum Foundation, whose mission is “to own, operate and control” the Runestone Museum… A classroom shortage at Jefferson High School resulted in one art class conducting classes in a hallway. The carpentry class will build summer homes that will temporarily serve as classrooms when completed… An art exhibit of 60 Old World biblical reproductions by two famous Dutch artists will be guarded by National Guardsmen while on display at the Armory.

25 YEARS AGO

SEPTEMBER 1987

Larry and Vicki Carlson of Evansville were selected as Douglas County Soil Conservationist of the Year. They will be honored during the annual Minnesota Soil and Water Conservation District convention… Terry Quist was hired as curriculum director for District 206 schools. He has taught social studies in public schools and most recently was assistant principal in Apple Valley High School… When some teachers expressed concern that wild hairstyles and clothing worn by some students might create disturbances that could affect “the educational process,” Principal Keith Redfield called a special meeting of teachers and administrators to discuss the matter. All agreed that if the school were to mandate hairstyles, an issue that is not a problem could get blown out of proportion.

10 YEARS AGO

SEPTEMBER 2002

An estimated 1,500 people oohed and aahed as 305 hot rods from the Minnesota Street Rod Association cruised up and down Broadway in Alexandria on Saturday. Dan Rooney and Candy Marquette lobbied to bring the event to town… In recognition of JoAnn Vogt’s commitment to the community and for her outstanding services, 3M Corporation is donating $200 to Zion Lutheran Church on her behalf… A community-wide memorial service, “Our Nation Grieves, Our Community Unites,” brought a crowd of about 2,500 to Citizens Field to reflect on the past and to rejoice in the freedom Americans enjoy. At the event, Postmaster Bruce Nelson presented a framed drawing of a new postage stamp to Fire Chief Mike Donnay depicting New York firefighters raising the flag at Ground Zero.
