The Alexandria girls’ soccer team needed to bounce back from a 5-0 loss to Brainerd earlier in the week and that’s exactly what the Cardinals did in a 3-0 win over St. Cloud Tech last Thursday.
“The girls played strong for 80 minutes,” head coach Tom Roos said. “From start to finish.”
The Cardinals wasted no time setting the tone at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud. Gabby Koel sent a shot off the post just three and a half minutes in before Anna Spanbauer gathered the rebound and put it in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Alexandria added two unassisted goals after halftime. Emily Korkowski lofted a shot over the keeper almost 13 minutes in before Spanbauer got her second of the night on a breakaway with eight minutes left.
“We were pleased to see improvement in numerous areas besides finishing our scoring opportunities,” Roos said. “The defensive unit was much improved and kept the Tigers from getting a single shot on goal in the second half.”
Sarah Bruzek anchored that defense by picking up her second shutout of the season. The Cardinals moved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Central Lakes Conference with the win.
