Card football: Rocori handles Alexandria with ease

The Alexandria football team knew Rocori would be athletic after watching them on tape from week one.

Last Friday, the Cardinals got a sense for just how athletic in a 43-0 loss that dropped Alexandria to 0-2 on the young season. Spartans’ quarterback Mac Mueller was the story for Rocori for the second straight week. The senior signal caller accounted for 258 total yards and five touchdowns on the night.

Mueller and the weapons around him showed off their big-play ability all night. Mueller threw touchdown passes of 17, 44, 38 and 23 yards. Senior Jake Huber caught two of those scores as he finished with 81 yards receiving. The Spartans showed their explosiveness in the running game as well, scoring on plays of 23 and 42 yards.

Alexandria was never able to counter on offense. The Cardinals had just six first downs and 137 yards of total offense. They ran for 114 yards as Nathan Huss (5-48) and Justin Cumberbatch (10-41) led them on the ground. Quarterback John Vogeler was held to 4-of-11 passing for 23 yards.

Four lost fumbles didn’t help Alexandria either. The Cardinals fell behind early as Rocori scored 16 in the first quarter and added three more touchdowns in the second to make it a 37-0 game at the half.

Alexandria will have to try to bounce back against another undefeated team this Friday night. The Cardinals will be on the road at Fergus Falls after the Otters earned one-point wins over Sauk Rapids-Rice and Willmar in the opening two weeks.
