Card girls' soccer: Brainerd blanks Alexandria

Some days, nothing seems to go right. That day was Tuesday for the Cardinal girls’ soccer team as they fell to Brainerd 5-0 on the road.

“No, that is not a mistake,” said head coach Tom Roos. “The Cards were handed the most lopsided loss that we have experienced in the last couple of years.

“Brainerd showed a strong offensive attack, especially from senior Emily Beltran, who had three goals. She is the type of player who you need to get on right away or she can score from 25 yards out.

“But, at the same time, if you rush in too fast and dive in, she will leave you hanging,” he added.”

Alexandria had 14 shots on goal, including a couple of breakaway attempts, but were unable to put the ball in the net.

“Too many shots were either wide of the net or right at the Brainerd keeper,” said Roos. “In a typical game, you hope to have a group pick up the pieces when others don’t execute – maybe big goalkeeper saves when a defense breaks down [or] timely goals from your forwards to answer back from opponents’ scores – maybe goals from the midfield when no one else can find the back of the net.

“Last night, no group was able to step up and keep us in the game.

“Shots taken – 16 for Brainerd and 14 for Alex – suggests a much closer game than the score indicates,” said the coach. “But there is no doubt – we got thumped.

“Our goal is to see improvement against strong offenses. We will have lots of opportunities for that with Tech on Thursday (last night), Sartell and Sauk Rapids next week.
