Card girls' tennis: Tech takes battle of undefeateds
The Alexandria tennis team ran into Central Lakes Conference power St. Cloud Tech and pushed the Tigers to the edge before coming up short in a 4-3 match last Thursday.
The Cardinals were in almost every match but two wins for Tech at the first and second doubles spots and first and third singles secured the win for the Tigers.
Ellie Bergstrand and Bria Schueler pushed St. Cloud Tech by each winning three-set victories in the singles lineup. Bergstrand did so at the second spot as she battled Katelyn Tarrolly 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Schueler won her fourth singles match against Sarah Donnelly by overcoming a 3-6 loss in the first to win 6-1, 6-2 over the next two sets.
Kim Wilkins and Miranda Sater remained unbeaten at their third doubles spot. The duo got past Steph Nardi and Katie Williams 6-2, 6-4.
“We had some opportunities at several other spots,” head coach Dave Ronning said. “But Tech is a very good team and was able to hold [us] off. I’m very proud of the way the girls played against arguably the best team in the conference. The girls feel we can take the next step and make a good run at them down the road.”
