Smile and say 'Butter'

Meg Hintzen of Carlos, representing Douglas County, was one of 11 finalists for Princess Kay of the Milky Way.
As a finalist, Hintzen, 21, was honored to have her likeness carved out of a 90-pound block of butter by long-time butter sculptor Linda Christensen on Saturday, August 25 in the Dairy Building at the Minnesota State Fair.
It took approximately six to eight hours to finish the carving.
While in the 40-degree butter booth, Hintzen was able to interact with the public, answer questions about her farm, the butter sculpting process and the dairy industry.
Her likeness will be on display at the Minnesota State Fair through Labor Day, along with the sculpture of the Princess Kay of the Milky Way winner, 18-year-old Christine Reitsma of Sauk Centre.
Hintzen will bring her butter head home to Douglas County and said she’s looking forward to continuing to share the dairy message with the community.
In an interview with the Echo Press earlier this summer, Hintzen said, “I’ve always known that I would be in the dairy industry in one way, shape or form — Princess Kay is just one of those ways.”
One of those “forms” turned out to be having her likeness carved in butter.
