Alex tennis: Cards remain unbeaten
The Alexandria tennis team won its sixth straight match of the early season with a 7-0 win over Rocori on Tuesday night.
The Alexandria tennis team won its sixth straight match of the early season with a 7-0 win over Rocori on Tuesday night.
The Cardinals needed three sets in two of the four singles spots, but Rebecca Lukes and Carly Snell persevered for wins at the first and third spots, respectively. Ellie Bergstrand and Bria Schueler both controlled their matches at the second and fourth singles spots to secure the win in straight sets.
The Cardinals’ doubles lineup overcame a bit of a slow start to cruise at all three spots. Rachel Sjostrand and Marissa Wheeler took care of things at first doubles in a 6-2, 6-0 match. Jenna Hedstrom and Jessica Larson won 6-4, 6-1 at the second spot, while Miranda Sater and Kim Wilkins won 6-3, 6-0 to complete the sweep.
“All of our doubles teams struggled in the first set but managed to clean things up and win the second sets quite easily,” head coach Dave Ronning said. “It’s not all bad to struggle a bit. At times like this, we find out what we are made of, and we get a chance to see how we will handle adversity in all shapes and forms.”
Bergstrand and Schueler remained undefeated in singles play with their wins. Hedstrom and Larson and Sater and Wilkins did the same in the doubles lineup with their straight-set victories.
The win improved Alexandria to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the Central Lakes Conference.
“Rocori is a young team with some good young talent that will make them very competitive as the years go by,” Ronning said. “It has been a great start to the season.”
