Alex swimming and diving: Melrose downs Cards in opener

The Alexandria girls’ swimming and diving team kicked off the season with a 111-74 loss to Melrose in the Cardinals home pool on Tuesday night.

The Alexandria girls’ swimming and diving team kicked off the season with a 111-74 loss to Melrose in the Cardinals home pool on Tuesday night.

Alexandria had two first place finishes from Madalyn Winger in the 200 IM (2:26.64) and Megan Bristow in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.69). Behind them, the Cardinals had 10 runner-up finishes as Alexandria tries to improve upon a 2-8 record from 2011.

“They have already shown progress, bettering all pre-season time trial averages compared to a year ago,” head coach Mark Storhaug said. “Looking back at the first meet from last year, most of the girls are much improved. That bodes well with the girls’ goal of winning five contests this season.”

Kalli Bowser led the way behind Winger and Bristow with two runner-up finishes. She took second in the 100 freestyle (1:00.06) and the 100 backstroke (1:07.77).

Other second-place finishers were Kate LeBrasseur (200 IM, 2:30.52), Beth Burnham (50 freestyle, 27.46), Jaylen Olson-Rodel (100 butterfly, 1:13.83), Hannah Eklund (100 breaststroke, 1:15.16) and Winger (500 freestyle, 5:47.92).

The foursome of Bowser, Eklund, Winger and Burnham took second in the 200 medley relay. Rachel Peterson, Bristow, Olson-Rodel and Burnham also finished second in the 200 freestyle relay, while Peterson, LeBrasseur, Bowser and Winger did the same in the 400 relay.
