The Bountiful Basket contents at First Congregational United Church of Christ (UCC) for the month of July and August were dedicated to school supplies for the Lake Traverse Reservation in Sisseton, South Dakota.
Members of the church filled book bags and collected backpacks to help the young people have the supplies needed for the new school year.
The contents included colored pencils, markers, crayons, pencils, notebooks, folders, glue, scissors, erasers and notebook paper. In addition, a large box of supplies was assembled for the teachers.
Mary Drum will deliver the bags and backpacks to the reservation. Counselors will then distribute them where needed.
For the balance of August and into September, the Bountiful Basket will be filled with winter jackets, boots, scarves, mittens, etc., as children are in need of warm clothing.
These will be gently used items that will be cleaned and mended by members of the church. They will be delivered directly to the reservation and distributed through churches.
The school counselors and church staff on the reservation refer to the “Alexandria Angels” when receiving donations from the community, according to Drum.
The mission committee selects a recipient area for donations to the Bountiful Basket each month. Some major benefactors this past year have been the Food Shelf, Salvation Army, the Alexandria Technical and Community College and United Way. Suggested donations vary with the needs expressed by the organization.
