Living Word Lutheran Church breaks ground for new facility

Two hundred members and friends of Living Word Lutheran Church broke ground on Sunday, August 26 for a 10,000 square foot worship facility at the intersection of McKay and 16th Avenue, Alexandria.

Two hundred members and friends of Living Word Lutheran Church broke ground on Sunday, August 26 for a 10,000 square foot worship facility at the intersection of McKay and 16th Avenue, Alexandria.

The new facility is the first of a planned two-phase building program that includes a multi-use fellowship hall, administrative and classroom space. A sanctuary, lower level classrooms and an outdoor amphitheater will be added in the second phase.

The groundbreaking ceremony began with a call to worship by ringing a donated bell that will hang in the bell tower of the completed building.

Representatives from partner businesses that had key roles in moving the project along were introduced.

Pastor AJ Kluver spoke about the groundbreaking of the Jerusalem temple in 1 Chronicles 29. He closed his remarks with Psalm 127:1: “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who labor, labor in vain.”

The church council and various committees took shovels and broke ground, then invited the congregation and guests to do the same. Excavating on the site will begin with concrete work scheduled for mid-September. Construction will continue through the winter with an expected completion date of May 2013.

Living Word Lutheran Church, a 250 member congregation, is affiliated with Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ, a worldwide organization of 800 member congregations, and the Augustana District of that body, a non-geographical entity organized to provide services to congregations.

The congregation meets at the Alexandria Holiday Inn at 9 a.m. on Sundays.
