Esther Schonberg and Camila Bjorklund, two young people from Douglas County, attended the 2012 Red, White and You Conference sponsored by the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation with support from the CHS Foundation.

The conference was held June 18-20 at the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph.

Participants heard presentations from motivational speaker Rick Metzger who spoke about personal growth and the value of citizenship, as well as learning about the legislative process and leadership. The conference focused on positive attitudes, patriotism, diversity and rights as a citizen.

“The purpose of this conference is to emphasize the freedoms enjoyed by Americans; many we often take for granted,” said Douglas County Farm Bureau President Vernon Hedlin. “We believe it is important that our young leaders take time to recognize some of the benefits and privileges we have.”

A long-standing tradition of the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation, Red, White and You is a teen leadership conference that focuses on the importance of democracy and the rights and responsibilities associated with freedom. More than 100 students from across the state attended this year’s program, which was open to any student ages 13-16. Douglas County Farm Bureau Federation provided scholarships for these two students to attend the conference.
