Ashby football: Arrows hope to improve on winning season

The Ashby Arrows football team hopes some record-setting numbers from last season can translate into a winning record in 2012.

The Ashby Arrows football team hopes some record-setting numbers from last season can translate into a winning record in 2012.

Ashby totaled 3,673 yards in 2011 on the back of 2,493 rushing yards. The Arrows averaged almost 40 points per game, but that only translated to a 5-4 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the Pheasant North Conference.

The Arrows lost four letter winners from that team, including leading rusher Jon Quernemoen. He is now a part head coach Andy Campbell’s staff, which will be responsible for trying to get the most out of a roster that worked hard in the off-season.

“We are a young team returning some key starters from last season,” Campbell said. “A very strong and fast group.”

The Arrows will have eight letter winners returning to lead this team. Junior quarterback Blake Ohren is one of those returning players hoping to make strides after throwing for 1,165 yards and rushing for 822 yards a year ago. Last year’s leading tackler on defense is also back in sophomore Hunter Fick. Fick had 123 tackles and 5.5 sacks as just a freshman last fall.

Senior Tanner Langlie is also back on the defensive line after leading the team with nine sacks to go along with five tackles for loss and 12 hurries. He’s joined by fellow seniors JP Moe and Dylan Barry as returning senior letter winners.

Campbell believes Wheaton-Herman-Norcross and Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley are two of the top teams in the Pheasant Conference again this season. The Wolverines and Warriors combined to go 21-3 a season ago.
