Alex boys' soccer: Cards use overtime to beat DL

Alexandria jumped out to a 2-0 lead before needing extra time to pick up a 3-2 win.

The Alexandria boys’ soccer team needed overtime but the Cardinals got a win in Cahil Collins’ debut as head coach against Detroit Lakes on Saturday.

Alexandria watched a 2-0 lead slip away in regulation. That just set up the heroics for Nick Heseltine as the senior forward blasted home the winner off a rebound from teammate Jesse Ohman.

The Cardinals wasted little time getting their season going in the first half. Jake Strand placed a through ball to Grant Becker who put one past the keeper for a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the game. Six minutes into the second half, Strand again connected with Becker to make it 2-0.

Detroit Lakes was able to battle back and tie it with two unanswered goals. Junior goalkeeper Zach Lamb stood tall after that to pick up the win. He turned aside 15 shots on the day to help the Cardinals come away with the season-opening win.
