Alex girls' soccer: Cards down DL

The Cardinal girls’ soccer team went on the road to kick off the season and came back with a 3-1 win over Detroit Lakes on Saturday.

The Cardinals got its offense going just 10 minutes into the game when midfielder Kayla Vanderveur found senior forward Gabby Koel in the penalty area. Koel gathered the ball and finished it from 12 yards out to give her team the early 1-0 lead.

Alexandria added to that lead eight minutes later. Jess Syvrud found sophomore Emily Korkowski on the right flank before Korkowski lofted a shot over the head of Lakers’ goalkeeper Kathryn Foltz for the 2-0 lead.

That’s how things went into the final seven minutes before Alexandria put the finishing touches on the win. Koel received a pass from Vanderveur and scored her second goal of the day to make it 3-0.

The Cardinal defense anchored by Sarah Bruzek in goal was less than four minutes away from a shutout when Detroit Lakes scored its only goal of the game. Anna Payne spoiled the shutout bid as she scored with three and a half minutes left.

It was too little, too late though as the Cardinals earned their first win of the season. Bruzek had six saves in goal to earn the victory.
