Holes-in-one

and double eagle

Greg Anderson of Alexandria recorded a hole-in-one at the Lake Miltona Golf Club August 10.

Anderson aced the 150-yard No. 17 using a 7-iron. He was golfing with Dave Beyer.

Four holes-in-one have been recorded at Tipsinah Mounds Golf Course this season.

Ray Wood aced the par-3 No. 6 with a 5-wood, Cathy Shea knocked one in on the par-3 No. 2 with a 3-wood, Beth Schneeberger aced the par-3, No. 2 with a 4-hybrid and Steve Nettestad aced the par-3 No. 10 with a 5-wood.

Mike Jones recorded a double eagle at Tipsinah on No. 17 using a driver, then a 5-wood.

Leland eighth

at State Amateur

Alexandria’s Maggie Leland finished eighth overall in the championship flight at the 41st Minnesota Women’s State Amateur Championship at Mendakota Country Club last week.

Leland carded rounds of 76-78-78 for a total 232, 12-strokes behind champion Sarah Burnham of Rush Creek Golf Club.

Minnewaska’s Samantha Falk closed her tournament action with rounds of 82-87-81 for a final 250. Teammates Brianna Janu finished with a 255 and Alexis Guggisberg with a 261.

In the first flight, Minnewaska’s Jenna Janu was second with three rounds of 82 for a total 246, nine strokes behind Jenny Muesing of the Pines.

In the second flight, Alexandria’s Amanda Bigger was also second, finishing with rounds of 85-83-87 for a total 255, five strokes back of champion Alie Nye of Braemar Golf Club.

Fall dance team

There will be a fall dance team program for girls in grades 7-12 that will serve as a starting point for dancers who are either interested or are a part of the winter competitive Cardinal dance team.

No tryouts are necessary. The team will be instructed by Felicia VanIperen.

AATA organizational meeting

The Alexandria Area Tennis Association (AATA) will hold an organizational meeting Thursday, August 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Glenwood State Bank community room at 2221 South Broadway in Alexandria.

The agenda will include USTA membership and grant application updates, status reports on the current Alexandria courts and the new high school tennis complex, nominations for the AATA board of directors and the 10-and-younger youth tennis program.

Special Olympics Young Athletes

The Special Olympics Minnesota’s Young Athlete program will be offering classes for 2 to 7-year-old children.

The program will meet from 4-5 p.m. each Tuesday from September 11 through October 23 at Lakes Area Recreation in Alexandria.

A goal of the Young Athletes program is to welcome family members of children with intellectual disabilities into the Special Olympics network of support.

Harvest Duathlon

The second annual Harvest Duathlon is set for Saturday, September 1 in Alexandria.

In addition, there will be a kids’ race for children 10 and younger August 31.

Alexandria 3-on-3 basketball league

There will be an Alexandria 3-on-3 basketball league beginning September 16 at Discovery Middle School for boys and girls in grades 4-12.

This is a non-coached league and players form their own teams and will play two 20-minute contests per night along with an end-of-league tournament.

Registration for the league must be completed by September 6, and teams must register in their entirety, not as individual players. Registration for divisions will be based on the age of the oldest player, unless a team chooses to play up.

This league benefits the Alexandria Youth Basketball Club.

Strike Out Illiteracy

The Echo Press’ annual Strike Out Illiteracy bowling tournament is set for Tuesday, September 18 at Garden Center Lanes in Alexandria.

Proceeds will go to the Newspapers in Education program, which provides newspapers and educational activities to area teachers for use in their classrooms.

Cost is $140 per team. There are also lane sponsorships for $100 and classroom sponsorships for $160.

5th-6th grade tackle football

Registration is open for Lakes Area Recreation tackle football for grades 5-6.

The program will meet Saturdays September 8-October 13 with grade 5 at 9:15 a.m. and grade 6 at 10:45 a.m. at Citizen’s Field behind Jefferson High School.

Practices will begin the week of August 27. There will be a parent meeting on Tuesday, August 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lakes Area Recreation gym.

Cost is $70 and includes a reversible jersey.

Registration deadline is August 17 and is limited to 80 players for each grade.

Minnesota High School Hall of Fame seeks nominees

The Minnesota High School Basketball Hall of Fame, a new venture featuring some of the most prominent names in Minnesota High School basketball, is seeking nominations for its inaugural class of inductees.

Basketball fans may submit nominations to Bill Bentson (webentson22@yahoo.com), Ron Haggstrom (rhaggstrom@yahoo.com) or Kevin Anderson (kja8067@gmail.com).

Teams and players are subject to a waiting period of 10 years, while coaches and other contributors must have a career consisting of at least 15 years.
