The Rev. David Adolph Hoyme, 76, died Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at Knute Nelson in Alexandria.

David was born September 25, 1935 in Brooten to Adolph and Julia (Norlun) Hoyme. His father baptized him on October 20, 1935 and David was confirmed on May 28, 1949 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brooten. David graduated from Brooten High School in 1953. He attended Luther College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1957. David attended Luther Seminary in St. Paul and graduated with a Bachelor of Divinity Degree in 1961.

He served his country for 32 years in the Army National Guard as a chaplain, retiring as colonel. He served active duty in Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm with a hospital unit from Madison, Wisconsin. He also was a state chaplain of Wisconsin.

David was united in marriage to Jeanne Grotta on July 10, 1960 in Brown County, Minnesota. To this union the couple was blessed with two sons.

After graduating from Luther Seminary, David was called to his first congregation at First Lutheran in Alexandria from 1961 to 1964. He served parishes including St. John’s Lutheran in Springfield, MN from 1964-1969; Gloria Dei Lutheran in Tomah, WI from 1969-1980; Lutheran Church of Peace in Platteville, WI from 1980-1996; and various interim ministries from 1996-2002.

David enjoyed fishing, golfing, running, in which he logged more than 10,000 miles. David and Jeanne led many tours all over the world for their churches. Most of all, David loved spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne of Alexandria; sons and daughters-in-law, Jonathan and Tracy Hoyme of Humble, TX; and Christopher and Leanne Hoyme of Randolph, WI; grandchildren, Nicole, Rachel and Sarah Hoyme, Humble, TX; sisters, Connie Sundkvist of Florida, Audrey Veek of Arizona, and Ramona Gorham of Minnesota.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Julia.

A memorial service was held on Monday, August 20 at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria with the Rev. Greg Billberg officiating. Music was provided by Randy Morken. Interment was at Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria. Military honors were provided by the Alexandria American Legion Post 87, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 936, and the Minnesota National Honor Guard.
