Women’s State

Amateur golf pairings

Alexandria’s Maggie Leland was in eighth place in the championship flight at the 41st Minnesota Women’s State Amateur Championship at the Mendakota Country Club after day two of play.

Leland finished day one with a 76 and day two at 78.

Minnewaska Golf Club’s Samantha Falk was in 31st place with a 82-87 for an 169; while Brianna Janu finished with an 86-88 for an 177 and Alexis Guggisberg closed with a 491-86 for a 177.

Minnewaska’s Jenna Janu was second in the first flight with 82-82 for a 164 and Alexandria’s Amanda Bigger was third in the second flight at 85-83 for a 168.

Holes-in-one

William Estes had a hole-in-one on No. 13 at Atikwa Golf Club on August 9.

Estes aced the 137-yard hole using a 7-iron. He was golfing with Dick Enstad, Gary St. Martin and Bill Peterson.

Also on August 9, Steve Hendrickson of Garfield shot a hole-in-one at Pine Ridge Golf Club.

Hendricks, golfing with Hunter Burchill, aced the No. 6 hole with a 3-iron.

AATA organizational meeting

The Alexandria Area Tennis Association (AATA) will hold an organizational meeting Thursday, August 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Glenwood State Bank community room at 2221 South Broadway in Alexandria.

The agenda will include USTA membership and grant application updates, status reports on the current Alexandria courts and the new high school tennis complex, nominations for the AATA board of directors and the 10-and-younger youth tennis program.

Lifeguards off duty

Lifeguards will be off duty for the season at Latoka and L’Homme Dieu beaches after Friday, August 10.

Cardinal Nation

Students in grades 9-12 will have an opportunity to purchase a Cardinal Nation T-shirt and a photo ID activity pass that will admit them to all regular season home events and concerts during the 2012-13 school year for $40.

This is a significant savings for students over the course of the school year in comparison to paying $4 per event for regular student admission fees. Students are asked to sign a code of conduct agreement regarding behavior expectations, with the understanding that misconduct during an event could result in the activity pass being revoked by JHS administration.

Beginning Monday, August 13, the Cardinal Nation activity passes and T-shirts will be available at the Jefferson High School activities office from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m., or they can be purchased any time throughout the school year. 

They will also be available during open house/orientation at Discovery Middle School and Jefferson on Wednesday, August 29.

Vining 5K/10K runs

The 6th annual Vining Watermelon Day “Run for the Melon” 5K/10K runs will be held Saturday, August 18.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the race begins at 8 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 210 and 457th Avenue in Vining.

Special Olympics

Young Athletes program

The Special Olympics Minnesota’s Young Athlete program will be offering classes for 2 to 7-year-old children.

The program will meet from 4-5 p.m. each Tuesday from September 11 through October 23 at Lakes Area Recreation in Alexandria.

A goal of the Young Athletes program is to welcome family members of children with intellectual disabilities into the Special Olympics network of support.

Alexandria 3-on-3

basketball league

There will be an Alexandria 3-on-3 basketball league beginning September 16 at Discovery Middle School for boys and girls in grades 4-12.

This is a non-coached league and players form their own teams and will play two 20-minute contests per night along with an end-of-league tournament.

Registration for the league must be completed by September 6, and teams must register in their entirety, not as individual players. Registration for divisions will be based on the age of the oldest player, unless a team chooses to play up.

This league benefits the Alexandria Youth Basketball Club.

Harvest Duathlon

The second annual Harvest Duathlon is set for Saturday, September 1 in Alexandria.

In addition, there will be a kids’ race for children 10 and younger August 31.

Fall dance team

There will be a fall dance team program for girls in grades 7-12 that will serve as a starting point for dancers who are either interested or are a part of the winter competitive Cardinal dance team.

Participants will learn one dance routine, work on basic jazz technique, kick technique, endurance and stretching as they work toward one performance at a Cardinal football game.

No tryouts are necessary. The team will be instructed by Felicia VanIperen.

YMCA youth

the Alexandria Area YMCA is offering a fall youth flag football league for boys and girls ages 4 through 4th grade. The program begins on Saturday, August 18, and ends on Saturday, October 6.

YMCA flag football is held at the Discovery Middle School outdoor fields.

This program stresses the basic fundamentals of football, and applies them in game situations. All flag football participants will receive a T-shirt and an award. Parent volunteer coaches are needed. See times and registration information online at www.alexandriaymca.com.

Grades 3-4 meet from 8:45-9:45 a.m.; grades 1-2 from 10-11 a.m. and pre-kindergarten to kindergarten from 11:15 a.m.-noon.

Silverstreak Classic golf tournament

Saturday, August 18 will be the 13th annual Silverstreak Classic at the Osakis Country Club.

Cost is $40 for members and $50 for non-members. Price includes 18 holes of golf, door prize opportunities and a buffet at the Osakis Country Club.

All proceeds go to the Osakis High School athletic programs.

Golfers can register individually, or in twosomes or foursomes. Golfers that don’t register as a part of a foursome will be randomly placed to complete foursomes.

The tournament is open to the first 72 paid entrants.

Strike Out Illiteracy

The Echo Press’ annual Strike Out Illiteracy bowling tournament is set for Tuesday, September 18 at Garden Center Lanes in Alexandria.

Proceeds will go to the Newspapers in Education program, which provides newspapers and educational activities to area teachers for use in their classrooms.

Cost is $140 per team. There are also lane sponsorships for $100 and classroom sponsorships for $160.

5th-6th grade tackle football

Registration is open for Lakes Area Recreation tackle football for grades 5-6.

The program will meet Saturdays September 8-October 13 with grade 5 at 9:15 a.m. and grade 6 at 10:45 a.m. at Citizen’s Field behind Jefferson High School.

Practices will begin the week of August 27. There will be a parent meeting on Tuesday, August 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lakes Area Recreation gym.

Cost is $70 and includes a reversible jersey.

Registration deadline is August 17 and is limited to 80 players for each grade.

Minnesota High School Hall of Fame seeks nominees

The Minnesota High School Basketball Hall of Fame, a new venture featuring some of the most prominent names in Minnesota High School basketball, is seeking nominations for its inaugural class of inductees.

Basketball fans may submit nominations to Bill Bentson (webentson22@yahoo.com), Ron Haggstrom (rhaggstrom@yahoo.com) or Kevin Anderson (kja8067@gmail.com).

Teams and players are subject to a waiting period of 10 years, while coaches and other contributors must have a career consisting of at least 15 years.

Ox Cart Days co-ed softball tournament

Crookston Parks and Rec and the Crookston Dawn to Dusk Lions will be sponsoring a co-ed softball tournament Saturday, August 18, during the Ox Cart Days festivities.

The tournament will be held at Highland Park and concessions will be available.

First pitch will be at 9 a.m. Registration fee is $175 with an $800 payout going to the first three places based on 10 teams. The tournament is MSF sanctioned.
